POOL DECK RESURFACING

Give the Concrete Around Your Pool a New Surface

The concrete surrounding a swimming pool is exposed to direct sunlight, water, normal pool chemicals, furniture, frequent foot traffic and Indiana’s freeze-thaw weather. Over time, the surface can become faded, stained, worn, rough, slippery, patched or visually outdated.

That does not always mean the entire pool deck needs to be demolished.

When the original slab remains stable and structurally suitable, Concrete Indy may be able to repair qualifying surface defects and install a decorative concrete overlay over the existing pool deck.

The finished Hallmark system gives the deck a new texture, color and design while allowing the original concrete slab to remain in place.

Important Clarification

This service resurfaces the concrete deck surrounding the swimming pool. It does not include plastering, fiberglass coating, liner replacement, gunite repair or resurfacing the inside of the pool unless those services are specifically listed in a separate proposal.

COMMON POOL DECK PROBLEMS

Is Your Existing Pool Deck Showing Its Age?

Worn concrete does not always mean the entire deck needs to be replaced. Here are some common problems that may make an existing pool deck a candidate for resurfacing.

01

Worn or Faded Concrete

Years of sunlight, water and use can leave the concrete looking dull, uneven or much older than the rest of the backyard.

02

Surface Scaling or Flaking

Light surface deterioration, scaling and qualifying pop-outs may be repairable before the resurfacing system is installed.

03

Stains and Discoloration

Pool chemicals, rust, furniture, organic debris and previous repairs can leave concrete with inconsistent coloration.

04

Uncomfortable Surface Texture

Older concrete can become rough, patched or uncomfortable under bare feet.

05

Outdated Appearance

A plain or dated pool deck may no longer complement the home, landscaping, pool shape or outdoor living area.

06

Inconsistent Repairs

Previous crack repairs and patches can leave the deck structurally usable but visually mismatched.

Not every damaged deck should be coated. Concrete Indy evaluates the existing concrete before recommending resurfacing. Severe settlement, heaving, deep deterioration, drainage failure or significant ongoing movement may require partial or complete concrete replacement instead.

HALLMARK RESURFACING BENEFITS

Why Hallmark Works Well for Pool Deck Resurfacing

The CTi Hallmark system combines textured finishes, decorative flexibility and an overlay approach for qualifying existing concrete pool decks.

01

A Textured, Slip-Resistant Finish

The Hallmark spray-texture system creates a textured surface that can improve traction around wet pool areas compared with a smooth coating.

No outdoor surface is completely slip-proof. Standing water, algae, ice, suntan lotion and other contaminants can still make a surface slippery. The surface must be kept clean and properly maintained.
02

More Comfortable Color and Texture Options

Lighter colors and the spray-texture finish can create a more comfortable walking surface than many dark, dense outdoor materials exposed to direct sunlight.

Actual surface temperature will depend on the selected color, direct sunlight, air temperature and surrounding conditions.
03

Custom Colors and Decorative Designs

Customers can choose colors, textures, borders and patterns that complement the home, pool, landscaping and outdoor furniture.

Natural Stone Slate Tile Brick Decorative Concrete Custom Borders Multi-Color Designs Spray Texture
04

Less Demolition When the Slab Is Suitable

Resurfacing allows qualifying concrete to remain in place. This may reduce demolition, debris hauling, disruption and reconstruction compared with complete replacement.

A practical option when the existing slab is structurally suitable.
05

Designed for Exterior Exposure

The Hallmark system is intended for exterior concrete and is promoted by CTi for resistance to normal weather exposure, fading, freeze-thaw conditions, stains, salts and everyday wear.

06

Easier Routine Cleaning

The final sealed surface helps prevent ordinary dirt and spills from immediately penetrating the decorative overlay, making routine cleaning easier than porous, untreated concrete.

The surface should not be described as stain-proof, chemical-proof or maintenance-free.

CTi specifically promotes its pool-deck spray-texture overlay as cooler, slip-resistant, customizable and stain-resistant, but these benefits still depend on color selection, installation, field conditions and maintenance.

THE RESURFACING SYSTEM

What Is the CTi Hallmark System?

The CTi Hallmark System is a professional decorative concrete resurfacing system installed over properly prepared existing concrete.

It is a multi-layer, modified acrylic cement system rather than ordinary concrete paint. The system combines a cement-based overlay with an acrylic bonding component, decorative color and a protective final sealer.

This allows the finished pool deck to have anything from a simple, lightly textured appearance to a more detailed tile, stone, slate or bordered design.

PRODUCT VS. SERVICE

Hallmark is the product. Pool deck resurfacing is the service customers are searching for.

The Right Product Depends on the Existing Concrete

The exact product recommendation should still be based on the concrete’s condition, existing coatings, drainage, intended use and the customer’s desired appearance.

OUR PROCESS

Our Pool Deck Resurfacing Process

Every resurfacing project begins with evaluating the existing concrete and preparing the surface for the Hallmark system. The exact process can vary based on the condition of the deck, selected finish and project requirements.

01
STEP 01

Evaluate the Existing Concrete

Concrete Indy inspects the pool deck to determine whether resurfacing is appropriate or whether some concrete should be replaced.

Cracking Settlement Heaving Scaling Delamination Previous coatings Surface contamination Drainage concerns Pool coping conditions Control & expansion joints Standing water
02
STEP 02

Protect the Pool and Surrounding Property

The pool, coping, drains, equipment, landscaping, walls, doors and adjacent surfaces are protected before preparation and coating work begins.

Concrete Indy will provide project-specific instructions concerning pool water, covers and access.

03
STEP 03

Prepare the Concrete

The original surface is thoroughly cleaned and prepared so the Hallmark system can bond properly.

Removing dirt and contaminants Removing previous coatings where required Pressure washing Grinding problem areas Opening and cleaning qualifying cracks Removing loose or deteriorated material

The exact preparation method depends on the existing concrete.

04
STEP 04

Repair Qualifying Defects

Suitable cracks, chips, pop-outs and surface defects are repaired with compatible materials.

Crack repair does not guarantee that a crack can never return. Continued movement in the original concrete may eventually transfer through the resurfaced finish.

05
STEP 05

Install the Base Coat

A thin acrylic-modified cement base coat is applied over the prepared concrete. This creates a more uniform surface and can also establish the color that will appear in the decorative grout lines.

06
STEP 06

Create the Pattern

Pattern tape or a stencil is installed when the customer selects a tile, brick, stone, border or other decorative design.

A simple spray-texture finish may not require an elaborate pattern.

07
STEP 07

Apply Texture and Highlight Colors

The primary texture coat is sprayed over the surface. The texture can be adjusted according to the project and selected finish.

Additional colors may be applied to create depth and variation.

08
STEP 08

Reveal the Design

The pattern material is removed to reveal the grout lines, border or decorative layout. CTi refers to this stage as the “unveiling.”

09
STEP 09

Seal and Cure the Surface

After the decorative surface is ready, a compatible protective sealer is applied.

The pool deck must remain free of foot traffic, furniture, water and other use until Concrete Indy releases the surface.

Installation & Return-to-Service Timing

Installation and return-to-service times depend on project size, repair requirements, weather, temperature, humidity, the selected finish and the products used. Your project manager will provide the approved schedule for your installation.

PROJECT SUITABILITY

Can My Existing Concrete Pool Deck Be Resurfaced?

Resurfacing is not the right solution for every pool deck. Concrete Indy evaluates the existing concrete before recommending whether resurfacing or replacement makes the most sense.

RESURFACING

Your Pool Deck May Be a Good Candidate When:

The concrete is generally stable.
Most problems are cosmetic or near the surface.
The deck is faded, stained or outdated.
There is manageable surface scaling.
Pop-outs or chips can be repaired.
Existing cracks can be properly evaluated and treated.
Previous coatings can be removed.
Drainage is generally acceptable.
The customer wants a new texture, pattern or color.
The existing elevations around the pool remain usable.
REPLACEMENT

Replacement May Be the Better Choice When:

Large areas have settled or heaved.
There are serious trip hazards.
The underlying stone base or soil has failed.
Deterioration extends deeply through the concrete.
The slab has extensive active movement.
Water is pushing through or beneath the slab.
Drainage or slope must be completely reconstructed.
Large areas are hollow, loose or delaminated.
Pool plumbing or structural work requires concrete removal.
The existing deck cannot provide a stable surface for the overlay.
OUR APPROACH

Concrete Indy does not recommend coating every pool deck. Because we can both resurface and replace concrete, we can evaluate the actual slab and recommend the solution that makes sense for the project.

CRACKS & JOINTS

What Happens to Existing Cracks?

Existing cracks can often be opened, cleaned and repaired before resurfacing. However, the Hallmark system is installed over the existing concrete and cannot stop the original slab from moving.

Movement caused by soil conditions, settlement, frost, tree roots, temperature changes or failed base material can cause a repaired crack to become visible again.

Existing control and expansion joints must continue to function. They should not be permanently hidden or bridged unless the approved installation detail specifically allows it.

Existing Joints Still Matter

Control and expansion joints are part of the existing concrete system. Their function must be maintained as part of the resurfacing plan.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Crack Repair Is Not a Guarantee

Crack repair improves the surface, but it is not a guarantee that cracks can never return.

The original slab can continue to move because of settlement, soil conditions, frost, tree roots, temperature changes or other underlying conditions.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SOLUTION

Should Your Pool Deck Be Resurfaced, Resealed or Replaced?

The right service depends on the condition of your existing concrete, the problems you want to address and the result you want to achieve.

OPTION 01

Cleaning and Sealing

Best Used When

The concrete is generally attractive and only needs cleaning and protection.

What It Does

Cleans the existing surface and applies a protective sealer.

Important Limitation

Does not cover major discoloration, patches or surface damage.

OPTION 03

Concrete Replacement

Best Used When

The deck is badly settled, heaved, deeply deteriorated or needs new elevations.

What It Does

Removes the failed slab and allows the base, slope and concrete to be rebuilt.

Important Limitation

Requires more demolition, debris removal and reconstruction.

The least expensive initial option is not always the best long-term choice. Resurfacing an unsuitable slab can lead to disappointment, while replacing structurally usable concrete may create unnecessary demolition and expense.

Concrete Indy will evaluate the condition of the deck before recommending the appropriate service.

More Than Pool Decks

Swimming-pool decks should remain the focal point of this page, but Hallmark can also be considered for other properly prepared concrete surfaces.

  • Slip-resistance requirements
  • Surface cleaning
  • Chemical exposure
  • Drainage
  • Maintenance planning
  • Scheduling around operating hours

How to Care for a Resurfaced Pool Deck

The Hallmark system is designed to be relatively easy to maintain, but it should not be advertised as maintenance-free.

General Maintenance May Include:

  • Sweep or rinse away loose dirt and debris.
  • Clean organic buildup before it becomes slippery.
  • Rinse normal pool-chemical spills promptly.
  • Use a mild cleaner approved for the finished system.
  • Avoid aggressive metal scrapers or sharp-edged tools.
  • Do not drag heavy metal furniture across the deck.
  • Follow Concrete Indy’s pressure-washing instructions.
  • Inspect the sealer for wear in high-traffic areas.
  • Have the surface professionally cleaned and resealed when recommended.
  • Follow the written care instructions provided after installation.

Important Maintenance Note

The decorative overlay and the protective sealer perform different functions. The sealer is a maintenance layer and may eventually need to be renewed as it wears.

Do not promise a fixed resealing interval until Concrete Indy confirms the appropriate recommendation for the exact sealer being installed.

Why Choose Concrete Indy for Pool Deck Resurfacing?

01

We Understand the Concrete Beneath the Coating

A decorative finish is only as reliable as the concrete underneath it. Concrete Indy evaluates settlement, cracks, drainage, deterioration, joints and surface condition before recommending a coating.

02

We Offer Resurfacing and Replacement

Some coating companies can only sell another coating. Concrete Indy can evaluate resurfacing, partial replacement or complete replacement and recommend the appropriate approach.

03

We Understand Indiana Conditions

Pool decks in Central Indiana experience hot summers, freezing winters, water exposure and seasonal temperature changes. The existing slab and resurfacing system must be evaluated with those conditions in mind.

Pool Deck Resurfacing Frequently Asked Questions

Pool deck resurfacing renews the existing concrete surrounding a swimming pool. The original slab is evaluated and prepared, qualifying defects are repaired, and a new bonded decorative surface is installed over the concrete.

This page covers the concrete deck surrounding the pool. It does not refer to pool plaster, liners, fiberglass, gunite or interior pool-shell resurfacing unless that work is specifically included in a separate proposal.

No. Hallmark is a multi-layer modified acrylic cement resurfacing system. It includes surface preparation, a bonded cement-based overlay, texture, decorative color and a protective final sealer. It is not simply a coat of paint rolled over concrete.

Some cracked pool decks can be resurfaced after the cracks and their likely causes are evaluated. However, crack repair cannot guarantee that movement will stop or that a crack will never become visible again. Severely moving, settled or structurally failed concrete may need to be replaced.

The spray-texture finish is designed to improve traction around wet pool areas. It should be described as slip-resistant, not slip-proof. Water, algae, ice, suntan lotion and other contaminants can still make any surface slippery.

Lighter colors and the textured Hallmark finish may feel more comfortable underfoot than many dark or dense outdoor materials. Surface temperature still depends on color, sunlight, air temperature and surrounding conditions. No outdoor surface should be advertised as remaining cool under every condition.

The schedule depends on square footage, access, concrete condition, repairs, existing coatings, pattern complexity, weather and curing requirements. Concrete Indy will provide a project-specific installation and return-to-service schedule after evaluating the deck.

The Hallmark warranty is described as a 10-year limited manufacturer material warranty against qualifying dramatic fading, delamination and general product failure. Coverage is subject to CTi’s current written terms and exclusions. It should not be interpreted as a ten-year guarantee against cracking, settlement, slab movement, sealer wear, misuse or every possible project issue.

Service life depends on the condition and stability of the original concrete, preparation, installation, weather, use, cleaning and maintenance. The manufacturer’s limited material warranty is not the same as a guaranteed service-life statement.

Pricing depends on:

  • Total square footage
  • Condition of the existing concrete
  • Surface preparation
  • Previous coating removal
  • Crack and defect repairs
  • Steps and vertical surfaces
  • Pattern and design complexity
  • Number of colors
  • Borders
  • Access around the pool
  • Selected sealer
  • Residential or commercial use

Concrete Indy provides project-specific estimates after evaluating the existing pool deck.
